What is Sciatica - and how Chiropractic care might help

For many people, a chiropractor can help sciatica, but the effectiveness depends on what is causing the sciatic nerve irritation.

What is Sciatica? Sciatica is pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, usually from the low back into the buttock and down one leg. Common causes include:

  • Herniated or bulging lumbar disc

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Lumbar spinal joint dysfunction

  • Muscle compression (such as the piriformis muscle)

  • Spondylolisthesis (one vertebra slipping on another)

  • Spinal Subluxation (Spinal joint out of place causing nerve pressure)

How chiropractic care may help A chiropractor first determines the cause through:

  • Health history

  • Orthopedic and neurological examination

  • Imaging (X-rays when appropriate; MRI if a disc herniation or more serious condition is suspected)

Treatment may include:

  • Specific spinal adjustments to improve joint motion

  • Gentle mobilization techniques

  • Flexion-distraction (often used for disc-related conditions)

  • Soft tissue therapy

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises

  • Postural and ergonomic advice

  • Home exercises and walking recommendations

The goal is to:

  • Reduce irritation of the nerve

  • Improve spinal function

  • Decrease muscle spasm

  • Improve mobility

  • Help the body heal naturally

What does the research show?

Research suggests spinal manipulation can provide small to moderate improvements in pain and function, particularly when combined with exercise and education. Many patients improve over several weeks regardless of the exact conservative treatment used, but chiropractic care is one evidence-support option.

When chiropractic care may work well

People often respond well if their sciatica is caused by:

  • Mechanical low back dysfunction

  • Joint restriction

  • Muscle tightness

  • Mild to moderate disc irritation

  • Early degenerative changes

Typical recovery

Many episodes of acute sciatica improve within several weeks with conservative care. Chronic cases or those caused by significant spinal degeneration may require a longer course of treatment and rehabilitation.

For someone with sciatica, the best outcomes usually come from combining:

  • Appropriate chiropractic care (when indicated)

  • Daily walking

  • Specific exercises

  • Good posture and lifting habits

  • Avoid prolonged sitting

  • Maintaining overall fitness
