Now that warmer weather is here, our footwear choices switch to more comfortable options - sandals being most popular this time of year. Here's some things to consider when making your choices...

Sandals With a Heel Strap - Pros:

  • Keeps the foot securely positioned on the sandal.

  • Reduces toe gripping and foot fatigue while walking.

  • Improves balance and stability.

  • Helps maintain better walking mechanics.

  • Less chance of the sandal slipping off.

  • Provides greater support for the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.

  • Better for longer walks and standing for extended periods.

  • More suitable for people with foot, knee, hip, or spinal concerns.

 Cons:

  • Takes slightly longer to put on and remove.

  • Heel strap may rub the skin if improperly adjusted.

  • Can feel warmer than a backless sandal.

Sandals Without a Heel Strap (Slides or Flip-Flops)

Pros:

  • Easy to slip on and off.

  • Cooler and more open in hot weather.

  • Convenient for short-term wear around the house, pool, or beach.

 Cons:

  • Less stable during walking.

  • Foot tends to slide forward or sideways.

  • Toes often grip the sandal to keep it on, which can strain the feet.

  • Increased risk of tripping.

  • Less efficient walking gait.

  • Greater stress on the feet, knees, hips, and lower back.

  • Usually not recommended for prolonged walking or for people seeking spinal support.

For Better Spinal Support

Choose a sandal with:

  • A secure heel strap

  • Good arch support

  • A deep heel cup

  • A firm, stable sole

These are generally the preferred choice, because it helps keep the foot aligned & reduces unnecessary stress traveling up the kinetic chain to the knees, hips, pelvis, and spine.

Stay healthy and take care of your feet this summer!
