What Is Causing My Chronic Back Pain?
The Answer Most People Don’t Expect
If you’re dealing with chronic back pain, you’ve probably asked yourself:
“Is it my age?”
“Is it because I’m overweight?”
“Is this just the stress of life?”
Those are the most common beliefs I hear from patients when they first walk into my office.
After over 40 years in practice, I can tell you:
👉 That’s usually not the real cause.

What I Actually Find in Patients:
When I examine patients—and especially when I look at their X-rays—I consistently see:
Poor posture patterns that have developed over years
Abnormal spinal curvatures (including scoliosis patterns)
Degenerated joints in the spine
Disc breakdown from long-term stress
👉 These changes don’t happen overnight. They develop slowly—and most people don’t realize it’s happening.
The 5 Real Causes I See Every Day
1. Repetitive Job Stress
Sitting at a computer, driving, or doing the same motion over and over puts constant stress on the spine.
Over time, the body adapts—and not in a good way.
2. Old Injuries That Never Healed Properly
Yard work, sports injuries, and car accidents often leave behind:
lingering joint dysfunction
scar tissue
altered movement patterns
Even if the pain went away, the problem often didn’t.
3. Tension & Mental Stress
Stress shows up physically:
tight muscles
restricted movement
reduced recovery
👉 I often see patients carrying their stress directly in their spine.
4. Lack of Self-Care
Without:
regular movement
strengthening
proper nutrition
…the body loses its ability to support and stabilize the spine.
5. Letting It Go Too Long
This is one of the biggest reasons pain becomes chronic.
👉 What starts as a small issue becomes a long-term condition simply because it was never addressed.
A Real Example From My Practice
A construction worker came in with severe chronic low back pain.
He assumed:
“This is normal. It’s just part of the job.”
But when I evaluated him, I found:
significant degeneration in his lower spine
long-term structural stress that had been building for years
He hadn’t done any real self-care—and had never seen a chiropractor.
What changed?
A coworker told him:
“You don’t have to live like that. I’m getting treated and it’s helping.”
That one conversation got him in the door.
👉 Instead of continuing to worsen, his spine—and his health—started improving.
What Most Providers Get Wrong
Here’s where I’m going to be direct.
Many providers focus on:
medication
injections
surgery
These approaches may reduce symptoms temporarily.
But in my opinion:
They don’t correct the underlying problem or restore the health of the spine.
👉 If the structure and function don’t improve, the problem often comes back.
The Truth About Chronic Back Pain
Chronic back pain is usually not caused by one thing.
It’s the result of:
long-term stress on the spine
poor structural alignment
lack of proper care over time
👉 And the longer it goes unaddressed, the more the body adapts in the wrong direction.
You Don’t Have to Live With It
Most people wait too long.
They assume:
“It’s normal”
“It will go away”
“I just have to live with it”
That’s not what I see in practice.
👉 When the underlying issues are addressed, the body has the ability to improve.
